Ikebana originated from Chinese Buddhism. During Kamakura era, in order to decorate Buddha in a solemn and respectful way, one would use the "The Five Implements" (two flower vases, two candlesticks, and one incense burner) as a way to offer to Buddha. In the Muromachi era, the tradition was simplified to "The Three Implements" (one flower vase, one incense burner and one candlestick). Most of these floral offerings utilize the "Three Honorables" (Buddha, France, monks) method, in which the floral arrangement is inserted vertically in the center of the bottle with symmetrical configuration and parallel erected structure. There should be a front and back side and the back side can not be placed facing the Buddha. Ikenobo floral art is widely respected because it not only cultivates beauty, but it also cultivates temperament, allows one to practice on concentration, help reduce stress and enhance personal accomplishment. Ikenobo floral arrangement retains the traditional flower arrangement spirit but also incorporated modern aesthetic elements.
