In 1995, Flushing, New York, that was when and where the first scout unit, Boy Scouts Troop 754, sponsored by BLIA was born. Six scouts, led by the first Scoutmaster Ling Tien and Committee Chairperson Venerable Chueh Chuan and supported by the venerable and volunteer adults, started the scouting activities and made the history in Fo Guang Shan Flushing temple.
Under the nourishment of Buddhism, guidance of venerable, and support of all volunteer adults, the troop has grown from 6 to more than 40 scouts today. In to the scouting activities, the troop actively participates in community services, such as cleaning city parks, running food drive, bringing awareness of cancer and organ donation to the community, ¡K etc. Environmental conservation is another emphasis of the troop. Reduce, reuse and recycle are not slogans but what scout lives by. The scouts did away with disposable water bottle and eating utensils, and ran rechargeable battery recycling program. Several scouts took a step further. They completed the training course of Leave No Trace (LNT) and became certified LNT trainers. They have conducted numerous LNT workshops to educate people the principles of LNT with a goal to make the Earth a better and cleaner environment for the generations to come.
In the past several years, boy scouts troop, worked with other scout units sponsored by the temple, reached out to other BLIA Scouts Groups in North America and held the first North America BLIA Scouts Jamboree at Deer Park, Godeffroy, NY in 2001. Subsequently, the Jamboree was run at Deer Park in 2004, at Blue Spring Scout Reserve, Ontario, Canada in 2007, at Deer Park in 2010 and 2013. This year, the 6 th Jamboree is being held at deer Park. Through these Jamborees, scouts and scouters had opportunities to interact, learn from one another and strengthen the bonding with fellow BLIA scouts.
For the past 20 years, 21 boy scouts had earned the ranking of Eagle Scout, the highest ranking in Boy Scout. Through the planning, organizing and execution of the Eagle Scout leadership project, scouts learned to be an effective leader. Since the founding of the troop, there have been numerous scouts graduated from the troop. These graduates, bearing in mind the teaching of moral principles and 3 Acts of Goodness from the temple, have become law abiding citizens and contributing members of the society.
In the years to come, the troop, under the guidance of Venerable and bearing the 3 Acts of Goodness in mind, will further improve the troop activities, serve the community and laid a solid foundation for the youth to be successful in their careers and devoting their best to make the world a better place for tomorrow.
